Obstacle Course Racing Monthly News Roundup

What the Hell Happened in OCR this Month?!?! April 2024 edition

News: Events

Spring is finally here, and the Obstacle Course Racing season is starting to heat up.

The end of April came with two big races. Tough Mudder’s first 8-hour Infinity of the year came to Missouri and the fun and difficult course did not disappoint.

And then we had Spartan’s first mountainous race weekend. The Tri-State New Jersey race weekend at Mountain Creek Resort is an iconic venue that’s been around for almost a decade now.

And we’re seeing a lot of positives with the Tri-State weekend. People had a blast even though the course was a tough one and we saw many DNF’s along that Ultra.

Plus the participation is looking positive! And when seeing the trend of Competitive Spartan Racing… being on a decline overall.

The Tri-State New Jersey was an exception.

Check out the following chart on our continued review of Spartan competitive racing.

4 additional race venues were seen in the U.S. from Spartan in 2024 but were not included here due to the following: Jacksonville was a National Series in which a large field of competition was out in Saudi Arabia. Dodger Stadium saw no race in ’23. San Jose was a new venue and nothing to compare. And Palm Beaches was one of the 3K series races last year, would not a similar comparison.

News: Athletes

Could it be that Hawk Call is a faster runner than his dad, Hobie Call ?

Yeah, maybe. Hawk won the Salt Lake City Half Marathon in 1:06.

Now. This Half Marathon had a slight net loss. But the Bryce Canyon Half is an even bigger net loss and it’s Hobie’s PR, where he went 1:04. Hawk says it would be close, but he might just be in shape to beat his father’s Half PR time. Hopefully we’ll see him soon in an OCR race to show off his fitness levels right now.

News: Community

Well, he finally did it.

Spartan race regular Tom Maming hit his 400th Spartan race in New Jersey last weekend. With this pace and the amount of extra race offerings Spartan keeps offering at each venue, he might hit 500 by year end!

News: Coming up

The second Spartan National Series race is coming up in May. It’ll be a big switch up from the flat and muddy Jacksonville course.

This May 18th, Athletes will head to Big Bear Mountain in California where they’ll hit an altitude of up to 8,064 ft. over the Super / 10k National Series race. It will be a fun one to watch and we’re all excited to see who shows up.
