Killington Spartan Ultra Race Mountain

100 Days out from the Spartan Killington Ultra Sufferfest

Listen up guys. The Killington Ultra is just 100 days away, and if you’re signed up for this sadistic sufferfest, it’s time to get your shit together.

This race is no joke, it’s a real kick to the dick.

With over 16,000 feet of elevation gain packed into 32 miles, this course is going to beat you like a red-headed stepchild. You better be training your asses off.

Earlier this year we had a post about Scott “The Fayne” Knowles’s 7 Tips on Running a Spartan Ultra Race.

Check it out for more details.

But let’s summarize what you need to be focusing on these next 100 days.

Time on Feet!

This is Spartan’s toughest and longest Ultra. You’ll be out there for 12+ hours EASY. So get used to being on your dogs for that long. Hike, run, whatever. Just get out there and do something.

Hill Repeats are your best friend

Have you heard about the Death March?!?! Yeah… the climbs on this course are sicker than Dingo’s mullet. You’ll see 60% grades on this course. So hit those hills hard in training and build up your running and power hiking leg strength.

DON’T STOP MOVING!

Even if you have to power hike like a mall-walker on meth, don’t you dare stop moving. That’s how the cramps and stiffness set in, and you’ll be as useless as a poopy-flavored lollipop.

Dial in Your Fueling, Gear & Clothing

You’ll likely need 150-300 calories per hour so your body survives this sadistic course. Test your fueling out in training to avoid gut bombs on race day.

And remember to train with your vest. Having water and snacks on you is clutch. Test out your vest. Wear it on long training runs and get it wet. Make sure it won’t chafe you worse than a diaper rash.

And of course clothing layers. Be ready for any weather Mother Nature throws at you. Pack options for rain, wind, and getting your nips frozen off.

Review Race Details

As the big day approaches. Get your ducks in a row. Map and Details usually come out 2-4 days prior to the event. Pay attention to the cut-off times: Know when you gotta be outta each aid station, unless you want to be that guy holding up the sweep crew.

Pack your Bucket

Stash a bucket at the transition with extra supplies. You’ll be glad you did when you feel violated after that first half.

For LOTS of suggestions on what to throw in the bucket, check out our article: “What’s in the Bucket?!?!”

Throw in supplies you NEED on top and supplies that are for emergency’s or backups on the bottom.

Stuff in there some extra shoes, socks, blister prevention, extra vest ready to go with fuel & hydration. And of course food and snacks. Whatever will keep you going and lift up your spirits!

Not gonna lie.

This race will punch you straight in the face harder than “Suga” Sean O’Malley.

But if you prepare properly, you might just make it out alive.

Get after it, you degenerates! The Killington Ultra awaits.
